Helping seniors live at home

October is Community Support Month in Ontario

September 29, 2014 – October is the time to celebrate the Community Support Services available in Prince Edward County through The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association.  It is a time to profile and thank the dedicated staff and volunteers of Prince Edward Community Care who every day deliver critical services to seniors and their families.

Community Care provides a broad range of services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation to the hospital or doctor appointments, foot care, reassurance programs, etc.  These services are integral to the continuity of care for people in a well-functioning health care system.  Find out more at the Open House being held from 2-4pm on Wednesday, October 15th at Community Care’s office in The Armoury, 206 Main Street in Picton.

“At Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors, our goal is to help seniors live independently at home for as long as they choose. We achieve that goal with a staff of dedicated professionals and with hundreds of committed volunteers – volunteers who tell us that by helping seniors live at home, they help themselves to stay active, healthy and connected to their community,” said Margaret Werkhoven, chair of Community Care’s board of directors.

Community Care for Seniors is working with partners: the Local Health Integration Network, Community Care Access Centre, Prince Edward Family Health Team; Hospice Prince Edward, the Alzheimer Society; and other health care providers to integrate care for people in this community. The support services provided by Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors are the key to a sustainable healthcare system.

Community Support Month is a time to volunteer – to help your neighbours and build community.  The mission statement of Community Care is to assist older adults to live in a home environment in reasonable independence.

Many services are offered, including Meals on Wheels®; Seniors Luncheon Social throughout PEC; transportation to medical appointments and shopping; friendly visiting to shut-ins; foot care clinics with specially trained registered nurses; reassurance programs; Home Help/Homemaking; help with forms; home maintenance – heavy inside cleaning and outdoor yardwork and snow shovelling; and completion of income tax returns for eligible seniors.  More volunteers are always needed to deliver Meals on Wheels®, visit and drive seniors and to help with other services.
