Seniors’ Month Open House
Community Care staff members will be all smiles to greet new and old volunteers at an open house to celebrate Seniors’ Month in Ontario. Everyone is invited to The Armoury from 2-4 pm on Friday, June 4th to check out the services offered and the volunteer opportunities available. The coffee will be on, new display board set up, and pamphlets ready to go. Genny Vincent, Vice Chair of the Community Care board says “this open house is a good time for our staff and board members to talk to volunteers, and to answer the questions of potential clients. We’re hoping for a good turn out.”
The image of a senior in a rocking chair is a dated stereotype. Chances are that a good number of the seniors in your life are some of the busiest, most active people you know. They can be found running marathons, serving on boards of directors, enjoying time with grandchildren, and delivering Meals on Wheels. The Minister Responsible for Seniors, John Gerretsen, says that “Seniors’ Month provides an excellent opportunity to recognize and thank them for these contributions.”
Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors has been supporting seniors to live independently at home since 1977. Services include Meals on Wheels, transportation to medical appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care, help with forms, rural route reassurance and telephone reassurance programs. The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts. Close to 500 volunteers help with the programs and services and many of them are seniors.
Community Care will also be participating in The Armoury service providers 5th annual open house on Thursday, June 3’rd. All of the agencies located in The Armoury at 206 Main Street in Picton will have displays in the main concourse from 10:30am to 12noon. Everyone is welcome.
