Legion Branch 78 continues long tradition of support for Meals on Wheels

A supporter of the Meals on Wheels program for the full 33 years meals have been been offered in Prince Edward County, Branch 78 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Picton has once again made a significant donation to support the wellbeing of seniors living in this community. On hand to present a cheque for $1,500.00 from the Poppy Fund was Mike Slatter, Branch 78 and Zone Officer and Member of the Poppy Committee; and Arthur Harrison from Branch 78 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Picton.

Upon accepting the cheque, Debbie MacDonald Moynes of The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association said "the support of the Picton Legion volunteers is amazing. They have delivered Meals on Wheels and supported the program financially for many years." "This annual donation to Meals on Wheels has been made to Prince Edward Community Care for at least 20 years" added Slatter.

The Legion supports veterans and seniors, along with children and youth, through the Poppy Fund. The Legion also has an extensive loan cupboard of assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, bath aids, etc.). For information call Legion Branch 78 at 613-476-3648.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association was established in 1977 and began delivering Meals on Wheels 3 years later. Besides hot and frozen home meal delivery the agency offers other services such as transportation to medical appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care, help with forms, respite, home maintenance, rural route reassurance and telephone reassurance programs. The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts, such as Community Care's Thrift Shop at 281 Main Street.
