Prince Edward Community Care update on services

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association continues to operate the hot & frozen Meals on Wheels program on a limited basis.  “We have amazing volunteers in this community and they are willing and able to deliver the meals to the seniors who need them” commented Debbie MacDonald Moynes executive director.  There have been adaptations to the delivery procedure to ensure physical distancing and safety for all.

Community Care has over 1500 clients on their roster and are assembling a group of their current volunteers to make regular reassurance calls.  More clients are being added to the call list each day.

“Dedicated community support to seniors continues in innovative ways online and by phone. Our board of directors remains actively engaged in the decisions that have been necessary to comply with the leadership of Public Health and all levels of government.  Members of the board are very reassured and proud of our organization under the direction of our executive director and talented team of employees.” said Barb Proctor, chair of the board of directors.

When seniors call the Community Care office they are asked to leave a message and calls are returned as soon as possible.  Seniors are provided with information on grocery and pharmacy delivery among many other questions.

“We are also receiving offers to help from people who wish to volunteer, prompting us to develop ways to interview volunteers without having them come to the office” said MacDonald Moynes. 

On March 16th Community Care closed until further notice: office at 74A King Street, Picton; Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street, Picton; Foot Care Clinics, Active Living Programs, Income Tax, support groups, seminars & Seniors Luncheon Social events. 

Programs presently operating with modified schedules, for urgent situations only, and with ongoing rigorous active screening of both clients and volunteers are:  hot & frozen Meals on Wheels and Escorted Transportation.  Friendly visiting and reassurance programs are still operating by telephone.  Watch for Seniors Active Living programs to be delivered using virtual options in the coming days.
